Rutgers at CSW60

Rutgers and some of our partners will be at the 60th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (#CSW60) that will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 14 to 24 March 2016.

          

As MenCare+ and MenEngage we are pleased to invite you to be part of our exciting and yet important discussions at the 60th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW60). CSW runs from March 14 to 24 at UN Headquarters in New York. The main theme for CSW60 is sustainable development and women empowerment. It is therefore our pleasure that this will be a platform for us to engage with women’s rights organisations, governments and international organisations about gender transformative approaches and engaging men and boys.

Our goal is to show that engaging boys and men for gender equality is improving the lives of women and girls. International agreements, such as the Sustainable Development Goals, recognize the ongoing inequality between men and women, and the power aspects of gender. It is acknowledged that by engaging boys and men and addressing harmful attitudes and practices and rigid gender norms, the lives and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) of women and men, boys and girls can be improved. It is essential that SRHR programming and policy efforts address the ‘gendered’ vulnerabilities and specific SRHR needs of girls and (young) women, boys and (young) men.

Update:

Rutgers welcomes the agreed conclusions of the CSW60. Women and girls and their rights are strongly represented in the text and there's a strong link with the 2030 Agenda. In the document two paragraphs are incorporated about the importance of involving men and boys in reaching gender equality. We are glad that at the CSW the role of men and boys is looked into and how they are part of this agenda. Unfortunately, controversial issues of sexual and reproductive health and rights are under pressure, such as comprehensive sexuality education and other than heterosexual identities, and gender identities (read homosexuality and transgenders). And it is a pity that these agreed conclusions aren't more progressive than previous UN outcomes.
Another resolution was adopted on hiv/aids. This was a difficult process. There is attention for the specific risks for women and girls, but key populations are overlooked. We find this a missed opportunity.

This is a roundtable session about how to work together on a joint agenda for gender justice with women’s organizations and engaging men and boys. This dialogue session invites an open discussion on these trends and their impacts on women, women’s organizations, and our shared goals to achieve gender justice for all.
