AIDS 2018

The International AIDS Conference is the largest conference on any global health issue in the world. First convened during the peak of the AIDS epidemic in 1985, it continues to provide a unique forum for the intersection of science, advocacy, and human rights. Each conference is an opportunity to strengthen policies and programmes that ensure an evidence-based response to the epidemic. The 22nd International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2018) will be hosted in Amsterdam, Netherlands 23-27 July 2018.

Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges

The theme of AIDS 2018 is “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges”, drawing attention to the need of rights-based approaches to more effectively reach key populations, including in Eastern Europe and Central Asia and the North-African/Middle Eastern regions where epidemics are growing. When HIV/AIDS first appeared as a public health threat in the 1980s, the Netherlands faced the challenge head on, embracing scientific evidence and working with populations that other countries marginalized and stigmatized. Dutch booth

Rutgers will be part of the conference in several different ways. Together with other Dutch SRHR and HIV/AIDS partners, we're hosting the Dutch Booth. Visitors can learn more about the Dutch Approach, which recognises the importance of linking sexual and reproductive health and HIV.

SRHR pre-conference

Ahead of the 22nd International AIDS conference in Amsterdam, the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and Rutgers are leading the coordination of the first-ever pre-conference focussed on sexual and reproductive health and rights. Taking place on Saturday July 21 2018, this event aims to create a vibrant and inclusive platform on which to foster thematic learning and networking focused on this integration; facilitate global connections and Further unite HIV and SRHR responses.

Our Bodies, Our Fight

On Saturday, July 21 2018, a pre-conference titled 'Our bodies, Our fight: Uniting the movements for HIV/AIDS and safe abortion care' will be held at Rode Hoed in Amsterdam. Rutgers is part of the global partnership of safe abortion, HIV and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) organisations hosting this event. It brings together more than 200 prominent advocates and decision-makers across the HIV and safe abortion spaces to discuss shared strategies and strengthen joint advocacy to address barriers to rights-based health care – with a focus on the champion countries of Brazil, India and South Africa.
