Dutch launch UNFPA State of the World Population report 2015

Refugees need safety, food and shelter, but to what extent are their sexual and reproductive health and rights met? These and other questions are still largely unanswered, even though the number of people in humanitarian settings has almost doubled in the past decade. Every day, 507 women and adolescent girls die from complications of pregnancy and childbirth in emergency situations and in fragile states.

Rutgers and UNFPA used the launch to draw attention to the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of refugees. Today’s number of refugees has never been as high and more than 100 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Within this group women and girls are the most vulnerable. The report therefore specifically raises attention to their health and safety. More than 26 million are women and girls in their childbearing years and more than 507 women die from complications of pregnancy and childbirth in fragile states every day. They, moreover, run a high risk of falling victim to sexual violence.

That is why Rutgers and UNFPA are organizing a special meeting on refugees and their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
