Rutgers and Women First Digital (WFD), an eHealth social enterprise that operates two safe abortion websites, howtouseabortionpill.org and safe2choose.org, are pleased to announce that WFD has joined the ‘She Makes Her Safe Choice’ programme, funded by the Dutch Postcode Lottery.

In our She Makes Her Safe Choice programme, Rutgers partners with DKT WomanCare Global to increase access to safe abortion. Alice Decoeur is in charge of the digital marketing for DKT WomanCare Global. Originally from Bordeaux, France, Alice moved to Paris. Very concerned about women’s health advocacy, she quit her job in finance and joined DKT WomanCare Global. In the run-up to World Safe Abortion Day, Alice shares what inspires her in this life-saving job.

Wherever you are located in Kenya, you will find one of the 587 RHNK health care providers, who are trained and supported by Reproductive Health Network Kenya (RHNK). The global Covid-19 pandemic is now challenging these providers in entirely new ways, yet they continue to find a way to ensure safety and choice remain at the centre of reproductive health care.

In early March, as we marked International Women’s Day and SheDecides Day, with various marches and community outreach activities for women’s rights, the Covid-19 virus started to spread across the world. Now that infection rates are soaring, death figures are rising in Asia, Europe, and the US, an increasing number of countries, also in Africa, are now in complete or partial lock-down. The need to protect women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and their access to safe abortion services becomes more dire than ever. Not only is abortion regularly marked as "non-essential", for example in several states in the US, but the pressure on service providers worldwide is severely increased due to the Covid-19 crisis.

DKT WomanCare Global, our partner in the She Makes Her Safe Choice programme, distributes the Ipas MVA aspirator in 80+ countries worldwide. DKT WomanCare Global is responding swiftly to the global Covid-19 surge and published this info sheet on preserving abortion care in this pandemic where women’s healthcare services, in particular abortion care, risk being deprioritized.

Every year 25 million women undergo an unsafe abortion and between 22,500 and 44,000 women worldwide die from the complications. She Makes Her Safe Choice works to reduce these devastating numbers by providing women with a safe choice.

We are proud to announce our collaboration with Reproductive Health Network Kenya (RHNK) for the ‘She Makes Her Safe Choice’ global programme. Through global collaboration we aim to realize the goal of having zero unsafe abortions worldwide by making safe abortion widely available, accessible and affordable to all the women and girls who need it.

Rutgers is proud to announce its partnership with SafeAccess Hub, a digital platform which shares practical guidance on safe abortion and post-abortion care. By spreading knowledge to front-line practitioners, this partnership will help to reach the ambitious goal of zero unsafe abortions through its She Makes Her Safe Choice programme.

This week Rutgers took important steps in Ethiopia to realise ‘the dream’ as part of their She Makes Her Safe Choice Programme, committing to drastically reduce the number of unsafe abortions and funded by the Dutch National Postcode Lottery’s Dream Fund. As part of this ambitious dream, Rutgers has taken an innovative and courageous approach in the design and implementation of the programme.

AMSTERDAM – The Dutch Postcode Lottery has donated € 11,9 million euro from its Dream Fund to Rutgers and its American partner DKT International for the worldwide reduction of unsafe abortions. The Postcode Lottery made this known during the ‘Goed Geld Gala’ in Amsterdam last night. The programme ‘She Makes Her Safe Choice’ will start in Kenya and Ethiopia providing information about contraception and safe abortion and will make safe abortion methods available. It is the first time that Rutgers has received such a large amount to improve access to safe abortion.
